The Society was founded in 1853 with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as its patrons and was granted the use of the title Royal by Decree in 1894. It is a Learned Society with an open membership and was granted a Royal Charter in July 2004, implemented from 1st January 2005 as a registered educational charity. In his introductory address, at the first public meeting held on 30 January 1853, called to inaugurate The Photographic Society, Sir Charles Eastlake described the object of the Society as: The promotion of the Art and Science of Photography. This objective has been in place ever since and remains the current overall mission of The Society to this day. |

The British Press Photographers' Association (BPPA) was founded in 1984 by UK press photographers to promote and inspire the highest ethical, technical and creative standards from within the profession.The BPPA provides its members with a voice to raise awareness and appreciation of our industry. The membership is drawn from every part of the country, and represents the broadest selection of newspaper, magazine and agency photographers.

The Scottish Press Photographers Association (SPPA) was founded in 2006 to promote and raise awareness of the profession within Scotland. The membership is made up of press and editorial photographers from national, regional and local newspapers, magazines and agencies. |
